About the Project

The Partnering for Student Wellness Project is a three-year research study to learn how help schools create a welcoming environment for students and staff. This study will evaluate evidence-based interventions and how they contribute to students’ academic and emotional/behavioral success.

What is the purpose?

The purpose of this study is to compare two different ways to implement behavioral health interventions to see which one makes school a more welcoming environment and leads to better student achievement.

Who can participate?

There are two different ways students and families will be invited to participate in the project:

6th, 7th, and 8th grade students receiving counseling services in participating schools will be invited to participate. Students and their parents who are invited to participate will talk to their counselor about the study and watch a video that explains the process in more detail. Parents and students will be able to ask more questions about the study and then both the parent and student can decide whether they want to participate in the study or not. If you are a parent and you are interested but still have more questions, please feel free to contact us via the contact information on the consent form or the Contact Us tab on this website.

Additionally, three classes (one from each 6th, 7th, and 8th grade) will be randomly selected from each school annually to complete a survey on how students feel about their school. If you are a parent and your child’s class is selected to complete one of these surveys, you will be emailed more information about the study and this survey, as well as a link for your child to complete it. You (as a parent) or your child are free to opt-out at any time by simply not completing the survey.

What will we do?

If your child is receiving counseling services and you and your child decide to participate in the project, here are the activities you and your child will be participating in:
– Parents will complete online survey asking about the mental health services your child is receiving and your satisfaction with these services
– You will be asked to complete the survey when you start the project, again 90 days after the first survey, and one final time after another 90 days.
– You, the parent, will receive $10 for every survey you complete. Your child will receive a token of appreciation (a toy from a the toy chest) for every survey they complete.

If your child’s class is randomly selected to complete the survey about the school environment, you will be sent an email with more details and a link for your child to complete the survey online. If you and your child decide to participate by completing the survey, they will be given a token of appreciation (a toy from the toy chest).
